RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF LEATHER AND PLASTIC SHEETING

In 1889 as „Deutsche Gerberschule” („German Tanners School”) founded and in 1897 as „Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Lederindustrie” („German Institution for Leather Industry”) established, nowadays Forschungsinstitut für Leder und Kunststoffbahnen (FILK) Freiberg is an all-round non-academic industrial research institution and partner for companies from different branches. Besides companies from leather processing and related industries, above all producers of flexible plastics, films, coated textiles and material composites as well as their raw material suppliers are partners of the institute.

The institute focuses on practical application-oriented research and development especially to support small and medium-sized enterprises. Together with partners from economy and science, main focus is to transfer scientific results into innovative applications, for instance by development, optimization, modification and diversification of technologies, methods, materials, products, recipes and testing methods.

The scientific activities of FILK are aimed at coating of laminar materials, like films, textiles and paper. Thereby, one main working field is the formation of functional layers and the modification of surface properties of such materials. This corresponds to the tendency of increasing requirements for materials, substances and the targeted adaptation of certain properties. The comprehensive machinery for processing plastic materials available at FILK can also be used by customers and project partners for different tasks and trials.
