The Chemnitz University of Technology got an internationally respected position in developing innovative fibre composites.
In 2003, the Competence Centre of Structural Light Weight Construction (SLB) was founded as non-profit organisation at the university. Main objective of the R&D service provider for the development of fibre plastic composites, components and technologies is the research into new raw materials and their application which is of the most important elements for application-oriented structural light weight construction. The profile of the Competence Centre covers the development of fibre composite components under consideration of special fibre properties or at the basis of innovative light weight concepts from metal structure, the calculation, dimensioning and construction of fibre composite parts and components of metal light weight construction, the development and mould proving of novel textile semi-finished products and structures for functional fibre composites, the development of semi-finished products based on re-growing materials as well as the development and transfer of new production methods to manufacture light weight structures economically.
Furthermore, the Competence Centre offers the implementation of intelligent construction methods by multifunctional raw materials, the development of joining technologies for fibre composites and their connection to other materials, project and personal management for interdisciplinary joint projects, the compilation of studies, searches, market analyses, knowledge transfer to train companies in light weight construction and the use of novel raw materials, the development of components and technologies for fibre reinforced injection moulding parts, contract manufacture based on prototyping and small batch production of fibre composites.
