Sächsisches Textilforschungsinstitut e.V. (STFI) at Chemnitz University of Technology acts as strategically important innovation centre for the regional textile and clothing industries. Thanks to the activities of STFI, many medium-sized textile enterprises in Saxony are able to compete with innovative products at the world market.
With about 600 partners and customers in more than 60 countries, STFI is belonging to the internationally leading textile research and testing institutions. The institute has a world-wide known top position in the research field of nonwovens as well as in enhancement of stitch-bonding technology Malimo® invented in the Chemnitz Region in 1949. This development has also been in the focus of the innovative regional growth core MaliTec®. Most important working fields of the growth core are applications of Malimo® technology in vehicle construction (car interior, car body panels), in manufacturing of orthopaedic aids, of moving machinery parts, of packaging and insulation materials, of textiles for air and water cleaning as well as of geotextiles for civil engineering. Further research fields are mobile textiles, protective textiles, geotextiles, textile filters and home textiles. Currently, STFI has 115 employees and is working on about 100 research projects per year. Up to 10 patents and industrial property rights are filed every year.
