Hygienic and medical textiles

Nowadays, medical textiles are used in prevention, diagnostics, monitoring and care, but also as implants or sewing material. Intensive research and development activities generate innovative applications for textiles in medical and hygienic sectors. The potential concealed in this segment is huge and not utilised. A close cooperation between physicians, biologists and textile engineers is required to exhaust all possibilities. Detailed research work needs long development and testing duration to fulfil all quality and authorization requirements.

Products for medical application are for instance surgical packs, scrubs, bandages, sterile packagings and pads. Fibre reinforced plastics are more and more used in surgery and orthopaedics, for instance as protheses. Textile products such as surgical hoses, insoles, body bandages and supportings are used in orthopaedics to heal and relieve dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system. But also in medical engineering technical textiles are applied, for instance as filter media.
