Protective textiles and functional clothing

Innovations in fibres, fabric production, finishing, lamination and coating lead to novel material and product variants for different applications in this special market segment of technical textiles. Starting point for such innovations are mainly extreme requirements for productive textiles. Spectacular example is the space suit for astronauts. Further application fields are for fire fighters, military, police or in industrial branches such as steel or chemical industries. According to its foreseen application, protective clothing has to ensure safety under several conditions.

Examples from textile packaging materials show that protective and safety textiles do not only protect humans, but also goods. This is also valid for special clean room clothing, protecting the sensitive products in semiconductor industry against contamination.

Textiles with functional properties are increasingly demanded for sports and leisure. Amateur as well as professional sportsmen wear clothing with climate regulating properties. Water-repellent finishing is nowadays state-of-the-art for high-quality outdoor products.
